Why do we celebrate father’s day?

Father’s day is generally celebrated around the world to acknowledge the contribution of father’s and father figures in the lives of their children. Father’s day is celebrated every third Sunday in June is marked as father’s day honor and appreciate fatherhood. The day emphasizes on the role of a father in their children’s lives and acknowledges the contribution of fathers to the society and their respective family. As the world today marks the 2022 world father’s day, Nigerian children have eulogized their fathers for the huge sacrifices they are making daily for their upkeep. It is also a reminder to the younger generation of men how much positive impact they can make in their families, businesses, and society at large. 

 


 

Father’s day is a holiday of honoring fatherhood and paternal bonds, as well as the influence of fathers in society. The day is held on various dates across the world, and different regions maintain their own traditions of honoring fatherhood. It is also a day that commemorates fatherhood and appreciates all fathers and fathers (including grandfathers, great – grandfathers, stepfathers, and foster fathers) as well as their contribution to society.

 

History of father’s Day

In the year 1910, Washington State Governor declared Father’s Day on the 19th of July. Dates back to 1910 in Spokane, Washington, where 27 – year – old Sonora Dodd was at a church thinking about how grateful she was for her father when she had the idea for father’s day, which would mirror mother’s day but be celebrated in June, her dad’s birthday month. She was successful and in 1910, Washington State celebrated the first statewide observance of Father’s Day in the country. 

According to another history report, Father’s day was first observed on July 5, 1908, when a west Virginia church held a service in memory of 362 men who had died in December in explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monogah. However, this was a one – time event and not an annual affair.

Father’s Day usually falls on the third Sunday of June. The date of the holiday changes each year but always remains on a Sunday. The day is an occasion for families to celebrate fathers.  Many families shower them with gifts, while shop rites and restaurants are full of families taking fathers out for a meal.

Father’s day is celebrated in more than 100 countries, in fact worldwide. This day was celebrated to honor all fathers and fatherhood in the world. The day is held on various dates across the world, and different regions maintain their own traditions of honoring fatherhood. Fathers have a lot of responsibility in the lives of so many not just their biological children but many of them that have no fathers by setting examples to lead an exemplary life. Fathers should ensure that they monitor their children, make sure that they not drifting away, and letting children know that the eyes of their father are constantly on them. It is also a reminder to the younger generation of men how much positive impact they can make in their families, businesses, and society at large.

In 2020, due to lock down restrictions, social media platforms were flooded with greetings and messages and 2021 may have just set the same record, as this medium increases in popularity.

Nigeria and South Africa are countries that celebrate father’s Day on the third Sunday of June. While in Mozambique, Father’s Day is observed on March 19 every year, Seychelles celebrate Father’s Day on June 16 and is not a public holiday.

To make their day extra special, you should definitely spend some quality time with them. Watch the movies or go to mall, spending those little moments with the man who loves you the most will be more memorable than any gifts ever. After all, quality time with his family is about the best gift you can give him on Father’s Day.
